Four Signs Your Atlanta Home May Have A Bed Bug Problem

10/15/2020

Some pests inspire a feeling of annoyance and some pests make you feel dread and hopelessness. One of those pests is a bed bug. This small flat pest is round in appearance and looks similar to an apple seed. While they can be difficult to detect they aren't invisible.

Most Atlanta homeowners feel like they came out of nowhere and this isn't too inaccurate. Instead of crawling in like other pests, this one gets around by hitchhiking. They cling to surfaces like your clothing, luggage, and car seats to get to new places.

When it comes to pests that property owners in Pittsburgh dread, it’s not surprising that bed bugs are at the top of the list. Part of this feeling lies in their small, round shape and their ability to hide almost anywhere. Combine that with how much they love to dine on your blood and it’s a recipe for discomfort.

Unlike other pests, this one doesn’t just come in through the window or drain. As such, it can feel like they appeared out of nowhere. The sad truth is that’s not too far off the mark. Bed bugs make it inside by hitchhiking on your clothes, luggage, or any other material they can latch onto, which is part of why they can be anywhere including your Atlanta home.

Recognizing The Signs

Bed bugs are a nasty piece of work thanks to their feeding habits. Instead of food or plants, they instead dine on human blood. As such, you're the one that's on the menu. If you desire to get ahead of a potential bed bug infestation, then you must recognize the signs of an infestation. These signs include:

  • Red And Itchy Bites: This is often the first sign of an infestation. Unfortunately, it's the most misunderstood one. This is due to them being mistaken at first for bites from other insects like mosquitoes. You can recognize a bed bug bite by how they appear. If there are multiple itchy welts in straight rows or clusters, it's likely bed bug bites. They will usually appear on shoulders and arms due to the skin there being more readily available.

  • Bloodstains: Thanks to their feeding habits, it's likely you'll eventually notice bloodstains on your bed or other surfaces they reside on. Bed bugs release an anticoagulant with their bite, which means it takes longer for bites to close. This, in turn, leaves behind evidence the next morning.

  • It Smells: Bed bugs leave behind a strong and musty odor. If you notice that your home smells like the scene of a dirty locker room without reason, then it's likely bed bugs are the reason.

  • Left Behind Evidence: In their movements, bed bugs will leave behind fecal spots, eggshells, and will also molt and leave behind their skin. If you see one or all of these signs, they are the next best thing to seeing the bed bugs themselves.

As their name implies, bed bugs will bite humans at night in nearly every case. This is for a couple of reasons. For starters, their legs are designed to cling onto skin or hair. As such, they need you to stay still so they can feed. When you're sleeping, you don't move that much.

The other reason why they do this at night is that they have learned that the lights being on means you're awake and moving. While you might try to trick them with lights, this doesn't work for long because they can detect the carbon dioxide you breathe out when sleeping. This tells them you're at rest.
