It's A Good Time To Think About Termite Control In Atlanta

3/16/2020

The south and termites go together like peanut butter and jelly. Due to our higher year-round temperatures, and humid climate, termites have everything they could ever need not only to survive but also to thrive. As we head out of winter and into the warmer months, termite activity will pick up quite a bit. If your Atlanta home is not prepared, it could be at risk of a termite infestation. Here are some other reasons why now is a good time to think about termite control in Atlanta.

What Is Termite Season?

Every year termites do something called swarming. This is where groups of termite swarmers are dispatched from fully mature termite colonies and given the job of establishing new termite nests. Here in Atlanta, swarming occurs periodically from spring to late fall, typically after a rainfall. There is nothing termites love more than moisture. One of the downsides to living here in Georgia is the fact that although termite season slows down, it really doesn’t come to an end. As long as the temperature outside remains above 50 degrees, termites will not stop destroying homes.

What Termite Swarmers Look Like

Termite swarmers look a lot like flying ants. The only main distinction lies with their stretched oval-shaped bodies and longer wings. One common trait of swarmers is wing shedding. It is typical to find scattered wings on window sills and around other areas of the home if swarmers have been present.

What It Means To Find Swarmers Outside Rather Than Inside

Finding swarmers outside of your home is not necessarily a bad sign. Although it indicates that there is a fully mature colony of termites somewhere nearby and that a new colony might be started near your home, it does not mean your home is currently under attack. However, if you are finding swarmers and or their wings inside your home, and haven’t been leaving any doors or windows open, we have some bad news for you. The presence of swarmers inside a home, nine times out of ten, indicates a present termite infestation. This means your home is most likely, currently being destroyed by hungry termites and, even worse, possibly looking at another colony starting up nearby to double down on destruction efforts.

How To Make Your Home Less Attractive To Termites

When it comes to deterring termites from your property, there are a number of things you can do. Here is what we recommend.

  • Remove organic and wood-based debris from your property including lumber, sticks, leaf piles, cardboard, paper, and dead trees or stumps.

  • Make sure your gutters are working properly and able to channel water away from your home’s exterior.

  • Avoid using wood-based mulch products, especially near your home’s exterior.

  • Fix leaky piping inside your home and eliminate any sources of water buildup that might negatively affect the condition of your home’s wood.

  • Use a caulking gun to fill in cracks, gaps, and holes in your home’s exterior foundation.

  • If not currently present, create a non-wood barrier between exterior soil and your home’s structural wood.
