“The dramatic increase in online searches related to bed bug treatments highlights a concerning trend across the state. This is a clear indication that bed bug infestations are increasing. While bed bugs are not known to spread disease, they can trigger anxiety, disrupt sleep, and lead to significant mental distress. Now more than ever, raising public awareness and taking proactive prevention measures are essential to help residents safeguard their homes." — Daniel Baldwin, Board Certified Entomologist at Hawx Pest Control

Baldwin shares the following expert tips on identifying and getting rid of a bed bug infestation.

How to Spot Bed Bugs

There are several signs that may indicate a bed bug problem in your home. Be on the lookout for::

  • Itchy bites: Most people only discover a bed bug problem after noticing itchy bites, typically appearing overnight on exposed skin in the form of red, raised welts or small clusters of bumps.
  • Blood stains: Small, rusty or reddish spots on your bedding or pillowcases, which may appear if you accidentally crush a bed bug in your sleep.
  • Fecal matter: Look for tiny, dark smears or specks that resemble black pepper or coffee grounds, typically found along mattress seams, behind headboards, or on furniture.
  • Eggs and eggshells: These are small, whitish ovals, often found in the seams and crevices of mattresses, furniture, and bed frames.
  • Shed exoskeletons: As bed bugs mature, they shed their skins. These empty, translucent shells are often found near their hiding spots.
  • A distinctive smell: A large infestation can produce a strong, musty odor that some people describe as a sweet or sickly-sweet smell.

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

Taking on a bed bug infestation is a true battle of wits. These masters of disguise are tiny, elusive pests that can turn a small nuisance into a full-blown invasion. Here are some steps for addressing an infestation:

  • Deep Cleaning: Wash all fabrics in hot water, then dry on the highest heat setting. Vacuum mattresses and furniture thoroughly.
  • Sealing: Use caulk to close gaps around baseboards and bed frames to eliminate hiding spots.
  • Encasements: Use specialized encasements on mattresses and box springs to trap pests.
  • Heat Treatments: Professionals often use extreme heat, raising temperatures above 120°F to kill bed bugs and their eggs.
  • Chemicals: Over-the-counter sprays can provide a temporary fix, but they rarely reach all the bugs, allowing the infestation to return.

While you can fight the good fight with home remedies, winning the war against bed bugs requires a professional. Experts at Hawx Pest Control are armed with the knowledge and tools to track down every last hiding bed bug spot and deliver a final, decisive blow.
