Bed bugs are tiny blood-sucking insects that can hide out and infest your mattress, bedding, upholstered chairs, and even your carpet or other furniture. Learn more about these common pests and how to address an infestation.

Common Questions about Bed Bugs

What are the chances of getting bed bugs from someone?

If you’re visiting a friend outside of their house, who has a bed bug infestation in their house, there’s some chance that a bed bug might jump from them to you and end up in your home, but the risk is low. You’re more likely to get bed bugs from someone if you spend time in their house.

Can mice carry bed bugs?

Generally, mice don’t carry bed bugs. However, rodents can be carriers of fleas and ticks, as well as some serious illnesses. People may also sometimes claim that mice eat bed bugs, but this is false.

Can you crush bed bug eggs?

Yes, you can crush bed bug eggs to kill them. To do so, wear gloves and squeeze them with a paper towel. Then, remove the gloves and wash your hands.

Unfortunately, crushing eggs isn’t an effective way to eliminate bed bugs. For every egg you see, there may be more hidden elsewhere. Plus, removing eggs doesn’t do anything about mature bed bugs and nymphs.

Can bed bugs smell blood?

No, bed bugs don’t track you down by smelling your blood. However, body odors can attract them. Primarily, bed bugs find hosts by sensing heat and carbon dioxide that mammals give off when they breathe.

Can I sleep somewhere else if I have bed bugs?

If you have bed bugs in your bed, you could sleep in another area of your home, but there’s a risk that the pests may be present there, too. Also, you could transport bed bugs from the bedroom to another area of your house.

As a result, simply sleeping in a different location isn’t a good strategy for dealing with bed bug infestations. However, you might decide to sleep on the sofa or in a spare room while you wait for a pest control company to come and treat your home.

How easy is it to bring bed bugs home?

Bed bugs can easily jump onto your clothing or belongings when you’re away from home. How likely you are to transport the pests depends on the severity of the infestation in the area where you are and how long you stay there.

For example, if you stop into a restaurant to order takeout and there are a few bed bugs at one table, you’re less likely to bring the pests home than if you stayed overnight in a hotel with a severe infestation for several days.

Are bed bugs afraid of the light?

Bed bugs aren’t afraid of the light. This misconception is due to the fact that the pests are nocturnal and prefer the dark. The truth is that bed bugs can still move around and bite even if you keep the lights on.
